Ian
and Victoria, pictured right (Ian is behind the camera, not the furry
one!), bought two Petit BGVs from Kandecx in May 1999.
We first spotted Smudge when he was only 2 week old - he has a lovely
black marking on his nose. We came to collect him when he was 8 weeks
old and there were still two puppies available. Beazer and Smudge couldn't
be separated so we decided to take them both!
About two weeks after taking the dogs home Smudge was quite poorly. We
don't know what it was to this day but an airborne virus has affected
quite a few dogs in our area. Petplan insurance to the rescue - all our
vets fees were fully paid (£350). Elaine will provide you with 6
weeks FREE Petplan, we would advise you to continue this cover as we found
out how expensive veterinary fees can be!
The next step was training! The PBGV is an intelligent yet stubborn dog.
It's really easy to teach them tricks. Beazer and Smudge will both sit,
lie down, come back, go to bed, bark, roll and present their paw on command
- though if they are not in the mood or there is something interesting
to sniff at they will not! We don't practice as much as we should though
and there are some PBGVs around doing the agility courses etc.
The dogs only need one walk a day - they really enjoy it! They'll have
their nose to the ground all the way around the park - always! They are
bathed when they smell and their coat just needs a brush every now and
again to keep it in order. We have to keep the ears clean otherwise infections
can develop - that's all the grooming they need!
We would describe our dogs as active, mischievous, playful, intelligent
and cute! It always amazes us how big a bark the PBGV has for such a small
dog. When Smudge barks his front paws lift clean off the floor. Beazer
has a pathetic bark but for some reason is the head of our pack.
What about Charlie then? Well Charlie came along some twelve months after
Beazer and Smudge. When Charlie's owner couldn't keep him any longer,
Elaine and Arthur took him back and looked after him for a few weeks.
They wanted to ensure he would fit into another home without any problems.
As it happens Charlie is a very friendly dog, both towards other dogs
and people. After talking to Elaine at great length we decided to visit
Charlie and introduce him to Beazer and Smudge. It was clear at this visit
that he would fit in - tails wagged all round!
So Charlie came to Walsall where we live and took a good few weeks to
settle in. Our pack of dogs became a little grumpy (normal) and Beazer
established himself as the boss. They all get on great now that the ground
rules have been set!
It has to be said that without the help and advice of Elaine, none of
this would have been possible. We had never kept dogs before - Ian had
wanted one for years - and we now want a Grand! We need a larger house
first though!
We would recommend Kandecx to anyone who has been 'seduced' by these
two lovely breeds. Elaine and Arthur live in a beautiful part of the country
and even if you decide not to own a BGV, you will have a great drive,
a good natter at the the other end and a cuppa.
If you don't fancy driving to Lincolnshire or are unable to then we live
in Walsall, West Midlands and would be happy to introduce you to Beazer,
Smudge and Charlie.

I brought " Herbert" home at seven
weeks old, he is a super boy very loving , if not a bit vocal, but that
is only because he is pleased to see me and anybody else for that matter.
He gets on very well with all other dogs he meets and is a real character.
I wouldn't be with out him.

Great website! I particularly enjoyed viewing the gallery. I was introduced to the GBGV at Crufts last year and have hankered after one ever since. We presently have a Cocker Spaniel, who is gorgeous, but I think he would enjoy having a GBGV as a brother. I am interested to hear that a litter of puppies is due at the beginning of March 2001 and may see you at Crufts this year.

I have two small children who I know would love a friend to be part of the family and we are hoping to move to Suffolk in the spring so we shall then at last being living in the countryside again. I shall certainly contact you when I am finally able to act upon my dreams, I was brought up with all sort of dogs and can't wait to have one again.

I would like to see pictures of the new litter born in March though, just so I can dream! Thank you for Harvey, he is known in the area now and we are often stopped to ask what kind of dog he is, and then I discover there is a petit at the top of the road! Small world. We are now owned by one of Poppy's and Elvis' puppies from their March 2001 litter.
We received excellent advise from Elaine, when we went to collect Penny (otherwise known as Lump and Thug), along with a very welcome cup of tea. I'm not sure that Joe (our Cocker Spanier is quite so taken with Penny who loves chewing his ears, which results in the fur having to be cut more than he was used to. However as they do curl up and sleep together we think that he forgives her.

Our family are so excited about hopefully having one of your GBGV puppies come to live with us soon. We are busy dog-proofing the garden, geting the puppy pen and crate down from the loft and cleaning them. In the meantime we keep scrolling through your gallery and await photos of the new litter. Excellent website with some good links. Look forward to meeting you very soon.

Thank you so much for your most informative, friendly & entertaining site. We currently have a 13.5 yr old springer (going great guns) and a 2.5 year old lakeland/fell cross Shandy/Teddy (the boys, who go everywhere with us - literally work, rest and play)! Sadly the day will come when Shandy won't always be with us. Hope to one day contact you for you to consider us both (partners of 8 years) to be the sort of couple you would consider to take on one of your puppies in time to come. Would love to meet a GBGV in the flesh, as I have only seen them on TV (Crufts) and your site. My little teddy is very similar looking to the puppy in the swimming pool picture that you show. We don't have a family as the boys mean there is no void in our lives. Like you, we live about 2 miles from the sea (between Aberystwyth and Cardigan on West Coast of Wales). Having recently purchased extra garden area we are lucky now to have a very large split level garden. We also have 5 cats in the household and "everybody loves everybody".
I have just applied to be an associate member of the Club as I thought it might be a good way to find out more - I feel they may not accept my application as I am not an owner!
Anyway I had better close now - I don't know how much more room I'm allowed to type as this is the first time I have ever gone "on line" and corresponded - as it were.
Perhaps you may have the time to respond - Or perhaps you would kindly make a note of my name for future contact reference - I expect everybody says that.
Once again thank you for your site - it's lovely to see a genuine breeder loving what they do and the dogs having a great quality of life - they only get one short ticket the same as us - so it should be the best journey you can give them. Best Wishes - Laura Warriner.
Hope all the boys and girls are happy and healthy!!!

Hello.
I am a mom of an 8 month old PBGV boy called Mint in Japan.
He came to my house the end of March and since then he has brought so much laugh and now I can not imagine a life without him. (although sometimes he is very naughty or too energetic and gives me a headache...)
I really enjoyed your HP, especially as I have never seen the Grand, even their pictures, before. All of your family is so lovely and now I am entirely captivated by the charm of both PBGV and GBGV.
By the way, breeders of Mint are also hobby breeders and they think it the most important to breed healthy and friendly puppies to be loved by any new families. However, the number of PBGV in Japan is still small and the consanguinity is getting so close, therefore, they are seriously thinking of importing a PBGV boy which is around 1-2 year old, healthy, well-built, many patterns and handsome like yours. They also wish the boy to be a direct puppy of Champion parents.
Do you have such a PBGV boy? or Is it possible to introduce PBGV breeders in England who you know to me (because I have been in England for 6 years so that I feel familiar and I can help Mint's breeders better)?
I will look forward to hearing from you!!
Best regards,
from Megumi Katakabe

Dear Elaine
We have a Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen bitch about three years old and are having great difficulties with diet. She weighs 30kg and is on a very strict diet. We would welcome any suggestions you have on exercise and dietry problems and any general information on this breed as we have had no joy whatsoever on their lifestyle.

Hallo Elaine,
Received our copy of "The BGV Voice" this morning and noted your web site in the breeders list and thought we really must let you know that Wallace (Kandecx French Connection) (formerley John) whom we took on nearly seven years ago is doing just fine.Any aspirations to "show" or to "breed" have long since evaporated and we enjoy the very best family dog you could wish for even when he's soaking wet covered in mud and smelling of fox poo and heading straight for the settee. Our work occasionally takes us to Lincolnshire so one day we will try and ring and visit.Equally if you are down this way we should love to see you again. Seasons greetings and a Happy New Year

We have a P.B.G.V called Dylan. He isn't a very bright dog,but he has character as he sings when my sister plays the piano. He is a very energetic dog as we find we have to take him out at least twice day, but he's worth it and it's good exercise for us ! In the past he has chewed up numerous amounts of clothing or anything he can lay his paws on. I was wandering if this was the same for the other people who have e-mailed your website?

We just got a PBGV last year (an elderly lady put out to pasture i.e. sleeping on the sofa and scoffing the biscuits). We love her dearly and she has the most super nature. Unfortunately, she has an extremely overpowering odour, regardless of the number of baths which she endures patiently. Is this significant of the breed?
I love your site and was very surprised to discover that you are so close to us! Griffon Vendeens deserve more recognition than they get, they are a fantastic breed of dog.

I bought a Petit Griffon for my husband for his birthday last July and we have had so much fun with this pup. My husband is head-over-heels in love with her and even though she shares her "favors" with both of us, she knows she can get away with things that I won't let her get away with and she's truly "Daddy's little girl." She has been a handful but she is so social that we are considering getting a sister or brother for her when we return home at the end of March. We are so happy that a friend of our introduced us to this breed.

Hi Elaine,
We used to be members of the IGVC Club but haven't heard anything from them since the last meeting we went to in December 2002. Is the club still running? We really enjoyed taking our pbgv 'Dudley' to the fundays and would like to know of another club we can join if the IGVC has stopped running? We got Dudley from Betty Judge in April 2002. We have attended both the Wag & Bone shows 2003 & 2004 and really enjoy seeing & mixing Dudley with the same breed.
We hope you can help us!

JJ has just started going to training classes and at 11 weeks old he's the youngest but the brightest (ok so i'm biased!)

We are thinking of having a Basset Griffon Vendeen (Grand). We really need to know if they are good with children as we have a nine month old. We are thinking of getting a puppy maybe next summer or Autumn. Please could you let me know as to when you will have another litter available. I have been brought up with Golden Retrievers and unfortunately lost my three year old in 2003 to epilepsy. We therefore want to go for a different breed and would be grateful of any information on the Basset Griffon Vendeen.

Great site!! My PBGV Masie-mae has been with us since oct 2003 when she was 8 weeks. She is very vocal at times it even sounds as though she is speaking. She has an enormous character, very affectionate and great with the kids. I have read it can be difficult to train off the lead but I had very few problems. All in all she is my baby and I would not be without her!!! (dont tell my daughter)

I have fallen in love with the Grand and Petit Basset Griffon Vendeens after finding them on puppyfind.com and seeing them on the Westminster Dog Show. We have a boxer living with us now but will be moving with my son to Kentucky. She is such a love and I will miss her very much. She is 70 pounds and has not had obedience training so is a little much for me to handle. I looked for a breed that was friendly, medium size, adorable, healthy and easy care. The GBGV and PBGV seem to fit all these requirements. Is there any more you can tell me about them? Are there any breeders in the US?

Wonderful site - plenty of info and obvious love for your dogs - such a pleasure to see. I have one dog, coincidentally named Griff. He's 50:50 English Springer and Norfolk Terrier (breeder disaster) and looks so much like a black and white BGV its spooky. He needs a buddy (the cats aren't playing) and a BGV seems perfect both in terms of size and character. Now we just need to move to our bigger house (and garden) soon, and we'll be ready. Hope to speak soon!

Initially James our little boy adopted the welly boot technique and now loves to play tug. Yesterday they played scalectrix one powers the cars and the other tries as hard as he can to stamp on them - absolutely hilarious.

Saw a Grand Basset at a dog show in Bridgewater this past weekend and was very intrigued by the breed. i love dogs with humor and this one didn't seem to have the droopy features and wet muzzle that the regular basset has. I had one and am very fond of the breed. How's the temperment overall. My big concerns are with their ability to be social with people and animals without risk.
If you are going to be in Central NJ anywhere for a show, please let us know. We'd love to come and see for ourselves

Just a note to say that 2 weeks after getting 'Max' home (a GBGV) we are still delighted with the service you gave and do not feel we could have got a better pup from any breeder. You were extemely friendly and informative when we made initial enquiries. The whole process of purchasing a pup from yourselves could not have gone more smoothly despite living a mere 300+ miles away.
Max is extremely friendly and well socialised with all who visit us, and everyone is most impressed with his good looks and cuteness. We are now looking forward to getting out and about with him once his vaccinations are complete to gain even more compliments on our beautiful new puppy.

Having lost our beautiful Golden Retriever just before Christmas 2006, we found ourselves dog-less after nearly 17 years. After a few weeks, we decided that we would look for a different breed of dog and discovered the GBGV in a dog magazine. After carrying out some research into the breed, we came across Elaine and Arthur's website which we found very informative. Wanting to know some more, I made the first telephone call, and found Elaine so easy to talk to immediately. We arranged to pay a visit to the 'wilds of Lincolnshire' to see the hounds for ourselves, and were made to feel so welcome instantly. We were introduced to the doggie family and had a friendly chat along with a much welcome 'cuppa' It was at this point that we met Shirley,(a GBGV) who was looking for a new home, but that home had to be very, very special. She captured both mine and Jeff's heart, and was all we could talk about on our journey home. We had also been accepted to have a puppy from the forthcoming litter. To cut along story short, there were a couple of conversations between Jeff and Elaine, and the following week, we returned to collect Shirley. She has just had her third birthday, has been with us for three months, and is an absolute delight. In May we returned to see the puppies, and almost in the same manner as Shirley, a dog puppy selected us. We have called him Robbie and he has been with us almost 3 weeks. He is now ten weeks old, and is being taught all the tricks of the trade by Shirley!
He seems incredibly mature for his age, there has been no mess in the house, just the odd puddle. He knows his name already, which Elaine instigated, and his life is one long playtime. We are so proud to be the owners of two such beautiful dogs, and they truly are a credit to Elaine and Arthur. We would be more than happy to invite people to our home to meet them, if Mablethorpe is little too far to visit and Elaine has our contact details. It's also good to know that Elaine is on the end of a phone should you need advice, or simply just for a natter. Thank you both very much.

I am very interested in breeding the Grand BGV here in the USA as it seems they are very rare indeed and the interest seems to be growing due to the lovely temperament and adorable physical qualities of this breed. I would love to hear from you in regards to this. I may be totally off-base about the availability here in the U.S. Let me know if this dream of mine is a possibility or just that...a dream.
Thanks so much for your lovely website and all of the information that you provide. I hope to hear from you!
