The Pet Detect microchip is by far the most advanced microchip on the market and the best value. Source : Pet Detect Q. Can you tell me more about the microchip? A. Pet Detect is a microchip containing a unique ID number assigned to the transponder. The microchip measures approximately 1mm sq. Each unique ID number is encoded onto the microchip during the manufacturing process by a laser that etches a code onto the surface of the microchip prior to the transponder assembly. The microchip is attached to an integrated circuit that uses a coil of copper wire wound around an iron (ferrite) core. This functions as a tiny antenna to pick up the energy from the scanner, and to send the encoded ID number from the microchip back to the scanner. Between the copper coil and the microchip is a capacitor used for tuning. Q. How is the microchip implanted? A. The chip is implanted by a veterinary surgeon or other qualified person, using a special pre-packed sterile needle, in a simple injection into the scruff of the neck. The procedure is similar to the annual vaccination although slightly more painful. Q. What is PetLog? A. It is the National Pet Identification Scheme, an initiative of The Kennel Club, RSPCA and the Scottish SPCA. It is a single nationwide database, administrated by The Kennel Club, containing over half a million registered animals, including dogs, cats, horses and exotics. Once your pet is microchipped you will receive a collar tag and the PetLog Registration Certificate. In the UK alone there are more than 4,000 scanners in use. Q. What happens if I lose my pet? A. Should your pet become lost or stray, it is likely that he will be picked up by the Police, Dog Warden or one of the rescue organisations. They are equipped with a special scanner which can read the pets unique registration number and the be able to find the owner through the PetLog database, this is open and accessible 24 hours a day 365 days of the year. They will then contact you direct and reunite you with your pet. Q. Has Pet Detect any official approval? A. In April 1994 the Commission of European Communities made a decision that microchips should be used as the positive method of identification of dogs and cats placed on the market in the UK and Ireland which do not originate in those countries. Pet Detect is ideal for use in these animals as the network of scanners extends throughout Europe. The UK Government chose microchipping as the means of permanent identification under the PET PASSPORT SCHEME. Pet Detect also conforms to ISO 11784 and 11785. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) has adopted the ISO standard for the UK.
